Comprehension & Writing by Oxford

Comprehension & Writing (C&W) by Oxford is a fun and colorful six-level supplementary series that develops reading and writing skills through a broad range of exciting texts. With engaging texts and topics to develop reading and writing skills, C&W by Oxford is the perfect partner for non-native learners aspiring to attain native equivalence. It builds up reading skills through a wide variety of texts students want to read including websites and magazines. The supportive writing tasks give students the opportunity to write ‘real’ texts about themselves such as emails and diary entries. Each chapter also has an optional vocabulary section for enhanced learning.

Why Comprehension & Writing in Canada

C&W by Oxford is an effective language program professionally designed to complement and fill in the missing gaps of day school learning in Canada. Since schools do not encourage exams or the use of standardised assessments, students' achievements are measured inconsistently. C&W by Oxford ensures English language learners receive comprehensive instructions, regular practices and constructive feedbacks to excel.

Writing

School children are receiving insufficient grammar instructions and/or practices in classrooms. Also, they are not writing regularly in schools. C&W by Oxford exposes students to different text types, covers all major grammar items and assigns writing tasks regularly.

Reading

Even when children are asked to read at home or are encouraged to read independently at school, they need to be taught how to read effectively and efficiently. C&W by Oxford explores different reading strategies to help young readers flourish in reading.

Assessment

Children are receiving irregular assessments depending on individual teacher’s expectations in schools. The lack of standardised tests to gauge students’ performances results in unfair and subjective school grades. C&W by Oxford includes a revision test after every 4 lessons of instruction. Students are fairly and accurately assessed to provide feedback to learners, teacher and parents.

Course Details

C&W by Oxford has six levels that focused on developing second language learners’ reading and writing skills.

The topics and order of the units have been specially designed to complement what students are learning in language lessons, making it the perfect partner for current coursebooks.

The wide variety of entertaining and ‘real’ text types such as websites and magazine articles ensures the material is what students will want to read.

The interesting content motivates students to develop essential skills such as reading for detail and reading for gist, and each reading comprehension is thoroughly supported with a pre- and post- reading activity.

The writing tasks give students the opportunity to write about themselves. This increases their confidence and enthusiasm to write.

Each task is carefully designed so students receive the right amount of support and challenge to improve their writing skills. The model text helps students to structure their writing, and the pre-writing exercise enables them to practise punctuation, syntax, and text structuring.

Vocabulary exercises give students the chance to practise the new words they have learnt alongside familiar vocabulary items from their coursebooks.
